The term you're looking for is overselling. Pretty much any and all web hosting companies do it nowadays and it causes more outages, and reduced performance.

If you site actually uses more than 100GB of bandwidth, then you should at least have a VPS, because at that point you should be making enough money off your site to cover these costs.

I think the skills most web designers have can be developed into management/upgrading skills quite easily. Internet sites need to be managed and sometimes large sections need to be changed/updated. This is what most people do now anyway, just updating sites and making sure they function. This is the problem with IT jobs, they will all (except for high-level creative) be outsourced/replaced with mechanical/robotic alternatives.

As a host, me and my clients prefer cPanel for ease of use, a bit slower than DirectAdmin, and costs slightly more, but for low CPU usage sites, it's the best option. On the other hand, if you want performance, DirectAdmin.

Thanks for the post. I agree with this. I think one of the best thing that make a web hosting or any other services online, is the response time it can dedicate to it's costumer.

Nobody wanted to be left talking to himself for hours or days wondering what his provider is doing and why aren't they answering question. In online businesses, everyone should be responsive enough, this is the only way to gain trust, the only way to provide solution and the only way to get rid of troubles.

Web desigeners will never be obsolete for 2 reasons:

1. those templates are created by webdesigners
2. Small personal sites may use free templates but companies want not only a unique webdesign but but custom scripts developed especially for them. The words cheap/free can even be taken as an insult by large corporations. The last thing they want is their website to be cheap/free.

I may be biased a little since I am in webdesign and web development business but I know what customers want.

This is what people don't understand. Shared hosting is for small websites, under 1000 visitors per day, mostly static or a joomla cms at best. We've had people expecting to run large custom scripts and web applications on shared hosts. This just doesn't work. At best your account is suspended and you get treated like dirt by your hoster, at worst you keep wondering why your site is so damn slow.

Yeah having a web host is much easier and they provide support and all those things. They worry about updates and bandwidth and space etc. I was also considering running my own website from home, but as I went along and discovering all the things you must do I just thought the hell with it. I'll rather pay a small fee to a webhost than to go through all that trouble. And you will have more time on your hands to learn other things regarding web hosting.

After all, web hosting companies doesn't charge that much. You'll probably pay more for your software and internet line at home than the webhosting fee.
