Why do I need web hosting? What web hosting provider do and why your website needs one.

Simply put, without a web hosting provider you have no way to serve your new website out to the internet. Web hosting is sort of like a virtual hard drive that you can store your website files and images on.

So why can’t I just put my website files and images on my personal computer’s hard drive?

Well technically you could, but for the most part your personal computer is not equipped to be serving out files constantly to the internet. Not only that, but unless you have a T3 line or greater, your website is going to take forever for a user to download when they visit your site.

Now take into consideration the technical aspect of serving your website off your home computer. It would take an unexperienced user weeks on end just to get the most simple services running on a home computer. Im not talking spending an hour a day for a couple weeks but hours and hours a day reading through a lot of technical manuals and a lot of unsuccessful installations and setups. It is a lot harder to setup your own hosting server than you would think.

Well…I would at least save money hosting it myself, right?

Think again. The cost (electrical) of leaving your computer on 24/7 will far outweigh the cost of going with an established web hosting provider. Not only that, but once you consider the dozens and dozens of man hours you put towards getting your home server setup the expense of doing it yourself has risen even more.

The reason you need a web hosting provider is because without one your new, great, awesome website will not be visible on the web. While you could host it from your own computer, it is far more practical and less expensive to go with a cheap professional web hosting service.

  1. Why you cant host your website off your personal computer…

Hosting a website off your home computer is not only more expensive, but takes a long time to learn how to setup a server from home….

  2. What about Free web hosting? what is wrong with these sites, what should I be aware off.

What is paid hosting give me, what Free hosting will not?

  3. yup, i have been skimming around web hosting services, there are lot of affordable ones, it also depends on the package or the deal… it makes so much more sense than doing it on your own…

  4. Professional web hosting providers are a real asset when developing an online company. The time that you could spend learning about and setting up your own host would better be spent establishing a client base so your revenue can begin.

  5. In response to CJ’s question. Free hosting is a great alternative to an affordable hosting plan if you only intend to build a website, chat room, blog, etc. for your family and friends to visit.

If your goal is to operate a business, then you need an affordable hosting plan. You must bring visitors to your site in order to succeed, and one of the best ways to obtain visitors is to achieve top rankings in the SERPs. Unfortunately, most SE’s frown on the use of free hosting sites which makes your task of achieving top rankings almost impossible.

You can purchase an affordable web hosting plan for as less than five bucks per month. IMHO that’s a small price to pay for the opportunity to own and operate a successful business online.

  6. Yeah having a web host is much easier and they provide support and all those things. They worry about updates and bandwidth and space etc. I was also considering running my own website from home, but as I went along and discovering all the things you must do I just thought the hell with it. I’ll rather pay a small fee to a webhost than to go through all that trouble. And you will have more time on your hands to learn other things regarding web hosting.

After all, web hosting companies doesn’t charge that much. You’ll probably pay more for your software and internet line at home than the webhosting fee.

  7. Be sure to check shared web hosting limitations, price is not everything. Lower price means fewer resources, and for some reason everybody only looks at disk space and bandwidth. When they should be looking at how much php memory they have, some hosts have 8MB limits, others have 64MB limits. Lots of scripts, from blogging to content management will not run on some cheap hosts due to the limitations. On that note, go check out http://www.aperturehost.com

    -Cheers!
