Advantage of a self-hosted Blog. Why using a paid web hosting service is better for blogging. |
Blogging is becoming more and more popular on the internet these days. Blogging can be an easy way for unexperienced (and experienced) users to put their thoughts and ideas online. If done correctly, a blog can be a great way to make money of your web page and/or add content value to an existing web site. However, this can only be taken advantage of if you are hosting your own blog
If you are using an existing blog network such as blogger or wordpress.com there is no way to monetize your blog. All the advertisements are controlled by your blog host and you cannot receive any of the advertising revenue generated by your site. Not only that, but any page rank(value of your blog to a search engine) is absorbed by the blog network.
When you are hosting your own blog, you have complete control over every aspect of your blog – including ad revenue. While it can be complicated and expensive to host it yourself, the advantage of self hosting your blog far outweighs this. In fact, if your site receives enough traffic, the cost to host your own blog will be covered many times over by ad revenue it has the potential to generate. Check out google adsense if you are interested monetizing your blog. It is very simple to use and can be easily integrated into your blogs’ theme. Another advantage of a self hosted blog is that you can add search value to your web site. Blogs are highly optimized for search engines and because of that, some blogs rank higher than the main web site it is incorporated with. You can use your blog to pass search value to other areas of your web site by linking your blog to specific pages of your web site.
If you are unsure of how to self host a blog, try and find a good web hosting company that provides blog web hosting. Some companies even offer auto installation of certain blog software such as WordPress. This can be really helpful if you don’t know the technical part of configuring the blog on a web server.

Do you have any advice on what software to choose when hosting your own blog?
May 21st, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Yes I recommend WordPress which you download at wordpress.org. It’s really easy to install and works really well. It has A LOT of themes (nice looking ones) you can install really quickly. The only thing I don’t like about it is it gets hacked a lot if you don’t secure it well or use an outdated version. So its always good to update it. A lot of sites use WP so naturally there is going to be a lot of people finding exploits.

I also recommend wordpress than blogger because very good templates that are availabe, lots of plugins.
@admin
Since you mention about getting hacked to the blog, do you recommend any good softwares that prevents from hacking?
Thanks
Chris

Agree that with self hosted blog you gain more power and control of your own blog. Imagine endless option of theme / template and additional plugins that you could just update easily from the admin page.
Not to mentioned that google and other engines love Wordpress and the tend to crawl them much faster. Just add the xml sitemap plugin and walla…! You will get noticed every time you update anything on your blog..

I have no idea why you have provided mostly inaccurate data through this post. I have a free hosted blog on blogger and not a penny of my earning goes to Blogger or is controlled by them. While wordpress doesn’t allow you to monetize your blog, Blogger allows you every control over it.
Also, in Blogger you can place third party ads, have any amount of hosting space completely free and sell links for your PR. These blogs are highly ranked by Google and well indexed as well. So, please update the post to remove these obvious mistakes.

I agree with Chris, wordpress is also a lot more flexible with regards plugin features etc. From an SEO point of view it’s the number one CMS for me.

If you have a bit of money up your sleeve then Squarespace is just the best. For $14 mth you have the most amazing blog you could imagine. I recommend you to check it out as an alternative

I have been using both self-hosted and wordpress hosted blogs. As for me, it is better to use wordpress hosted blogs because it is free and their servers never have lags.

as Lenin Nair said, u can earn revenue through blogger & cent percent of it goes to u. so i would again ask u to update the post. only wordpress.com doesnt allow ads.
but u r right. self-hosted blog is best especially self-hosted wordpress. it gives u complete control & lets u use sever side codes like php. & hundreds of free wordpress plugins r there to help u.

Drupal also has some seo features, you are able to edit the pages to include meta tags and al the other usual seo elements. Although I do prefer wordpress over all as a CMS, probably through habit more than anything

Yes, you are right about Blogger now allowing Adsense ads on there. I wrote this post awhile back before I published it. I am going to be making a re-write on the topic shortly.

It’s a good idea to have everything under your control and do whatever you want with your blog (like putting ads) that the blog network wouldn’t allow. What people don’t realize is that free doesn’t mean quality. You make a free blog, don’t have a domain and one day you will one to move on to something more proffesional. Have some custom plugins, put ads, write payed articles (all these things are not allowed on wordpress.org). Then you realize you can’t move the blog. They own the address. You can’t put a redirect either because you don’t have htaccess or php access. Bad luck. And you start over

Yes, indeed, but I would forget adsense and take an affiliate program relevant to the theme of your blog. Adsense is not known to make webmasters rich…

Thanks for letting me know about Wordpress. Because the technical part of configuring the blog on a web server was difficult for me but now I can do this with the help of Wordpress.

Nothing can compare to self-hosted Blog for more powerfull money blogging.
We could use other free service, but I think that should not be our main blog (IMO)

With the cost of hosting getting cheaper, it makes economic sense to switch to self-hosted blog where you have total control of it.

Just ran across your article. I’m a fan of self-hosted blogging. If you are considering starting a blog, and are thinking of just setting up a hosted one for now (with intentions to switch later) — just start off self-hosted. It will save you time and effort in the long run.

I think real benefit of hosting a blog and maintaining it, has been a very quick way to spread your business across the internet users. From the past few years bloggers have proved that a blog can benefits your website or business in very effective ways.
Also, if the blog is setup as a sub-domain on your existing website it will benefit to your websites search engine ranking. Any new content that is added to your blog will be treated as new content part of your main website. It thus helps promote better indexing and visibility of your main website only if the blog is hosted on the same domain name.

Are you sure that you can’t monetize a blog if you don’t own it? I thought you could at least put adsense on sites such as blogger?
Anyway, I am an advocate for hosting your own site for the very reason of having complete control, and for standing out. If you own control of your own site, you can design it however way you want. And the cost to run a site these days is very cheap (a few bucks a month at most for shared hosting).

Hosting your own blog with paid hosting account is much better than running your blog on free hosting sites like wordpress or blogger. Self hosting provides you the full control over your website or blog and helps you to monetize your blog properly. Also, a blog hosted on your website benefits your site in very effective way.
Every changes made on your blog is considered as the changes made on your site by search engines. So, whenever you make the changes on your blog, your website will receive the benefits of it. It has been proved by the search engine maketing specialists and bloggers that blogs can benefit your business in much effective ways.

Self-hosted is always best, and self-hosted on a dedicated IP is even better because you control all sites on that IP. Free and cheap hosting is not always the best. I like SEO Web Hosting from SEOHostingServices.com. Here are some coupon codes from their site:
FREESEO127
One month of SEO1 Hosting for free.
FREESEO250
$50 off your first month with the SEO2 Hosting option
FREESTARTER3695
3 months FREE (low-volume shared IP)

With web hosting and domain registrar prices as low as they’ve ever been there is no reason to not have your own.
This article doesn’t exactly explain that much, but its simple. You have total control over something when you own it. you are in control.
The real hard part is trying to pick which hosting company fits your needs.
My site has a few articles and deals regarding web hosting, if you feel like it, you should check it out.
Cheers,
Eric
